Saturdays with Weird al.

Category: Let's talk

Post 1 by catgirl (Generic Zoner) on Saturday, 11-Mar-2017 19:46:46

Hi there peoples, I didn't know where else to post this topic, so I decided to start this here.
This is a place where Weird Al fans can gather, and post their favorite videos, articals, and other things that talk about, or feature Weird Al. You can also share your favorite Weird Al experience, or moment, or why you are an Al fan, and you can post about whatever Al thing you can think of. So, to get started, here is one of my favorites. This is Al talking over a nervana song.

I actually saw this guy in concert back in the mid-90's. I'm just glad I wasn't sitting right down in front. He performed the parody "Smells like Nirvana", and during the bridge of that song he gargles water. Well, as I'm told, instead of swallowing it, he spat it out, and apparently a few fans in the front got wet. Beyond that though, I'm afraid I don't remember a whole lot about it.

Post 3 by catgirl (Generic Zoner) on Saturday, 11-Mar-2017 22:16:41

Oh my, I remembering him gurgling water on the record lol.
It was a good thing you weren't front row then.

It took me a while to get used to the guy but he really is brilliant in an odd sort of way.

Post 8 by Imprecator (The Zone's Spelling Nazi) on Sunday, 12-Mar-2017 12:10:55

Yup, saw him on that same tour in '92 in Cleveland. Some crappy local band opened for him and pretty much got booed off the stage. That was funny. And there was Al TV, where he would take over MTV for a whole day.

Post 9 by catgirl (Generic Zoner) on Sunday, 12-Mar-2017 17:45:31

Haha, I love those two songs, I love al tv clips, I love his kiper spazy screamy side lol.

Post 10 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Sunday, 12-Mar-2017 23:17:43

I don't understand how anyone could not love Weird Al!! Grew up listening to him and I still love his music to this day.

Post 11 by catgirl (Generic Zoner) on Monday, 13-Mar-2017 0:15:55

Also, if you listen to angry white boy polka when he gets to the slim shady bit, and if you listen carefuly, you can hear him reaching some low backing vocals.
You can also hear his wonderful bass in Truck Driving song.

Post 13 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Monday, 13-Mar-2017 13:18:56

The man is very creative and v vercitle in range and genre. I don't enjoy all his songs, but I like more than I don't. And I always appreciate parodies of songs I really just can't stand.:)

Post 14 by renegade rocker (I just keep on posting!) on Monday, 13-Mar-2017 17:49:27

What he did with that billy ray track still is hilarious to this day. He even had a mutch music thing here in canada called al music, where he took over mutch music the entire day, and he did that twice.

Post 15 by Imprecator (The Zone's Spelling Nazi) on Monday, 13-Mar-2017 18:08:05

He inspired me to take accordion lessons when I was a wee tyke. I never got good at it though. And Nature Trail to Hell used to scarify me.

Post 16 by catgirl (Generic Zoner) on Monday, 13-Mar-2017 18:29:00

mwhahahaha, I love nature trail to hell.
Those all music shows were quite fuenny, I found clips of it on youtube. I am so glad he did the achy breaky song, I can't stand the origonal verson, the man managed to pin presisley how I feel about the tune.

Post 17 by renegade rocker (I just keep on posting!) on Tuesday, 14-Mar-2017 0:31:28

So many years later the original of that is still horrible, and weird al's version is just as funny, and his take on a crash test dummies track doing news headlines I still love, and his original track you don't love me anymore, because each line of the track gets worse than the last.

Post 18 by catgirl (Generic Zoner) on Tuesday, 14-Mar-2017 6:52:30

ha, you don't love me anymore is a funy song to sing along with.

Post 19 by Shepherdwolf (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Wednesday, 15-Mar-2017 13:59:31

At one point last year, the heating in my apartment failed for a couple of days, right during a cold snap. It was very, very cold, and I was reading The Martian, which doesn't help. Anyway, I remember being cold, and throwing on some random Weird Al. First time ever I heard the song "I Want a New Duck", and it got stuck in my head for the better part of three days. It's ridiculous, but it still made me laugh.

And that's the thing. This guy can be stupid, or clever, or just plain strange depending on what you're listening to. I don't like everything he's done, but I like most of it.

He does have a pretty good vocal range, although I think it bears mentioning that some of the really deep voices are probably being auto-tuned.

Post 20 by catgirl (Generic Zoner) on Wednesday, 15-Mar-2017 16:03:00

I read his ask al page, and he said himself that he did the song truck driving song early in the morning when his voice was lowest.
In the shady part of the angry white boy polka, I thik I did here some voice altering technology when he reached the super low A, but I didn't hear any autotune, if I did, the audio injineers did it subtle enough to where it wasn't noticable. .
He does do some funny voice altering thing on Albukurkey on the low notes, and there is a difference between that, and what I hear in angry white boy polka, and truck driving song. I actually like the voice alter bits, it gives his voice a funny effect, and makes the song more humorous.
In the song sense you've been gone, it was his bassest Steve Jay who sang the low bass in it. Al has had vocal training. Here is a clip of him talking about it.

Speaking of autotune, here is a video featuring him explaining the history of the tool.

Ah, nature trail to hell, a classic.
In the song Geneus in france, Frank Zapa's son did the opening guitar solo. Here is the song.

If you had the once in a life time chance to sing a song with Al, what would it be?
For me it would be you don't love me anymore.

Post 30 by catgirl (Generic Zoner) on Friday, 17-Mar-2017 23:59:37
